International Conference on Human Rights in Fashion, Sustainability and Climate Change.

Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford

Oxford, OX1 2JD, United Kingdom

19th November 2022

The fashion, textile and garment manufacturing industry’s detrimental role in human rights violations disguises and buries behind the glamour, the dazzle of expensive jewels, high-end lifestyle, and bespoke clothing. Behind the glitz facade lies the hidden truths of an industry exploiting garment workers, modern slavery, child labour, forced labour, gender based violence, torture, inhuman and degrading treatment, discrimination, no wages, unfair pay and inhumane working conditions.

The International Conference on Human Rights in Fashion, Sustainability and Climate Change seeks to place human rights violations in fashion and garment supply chain at the centre of global discussions by converging multi-disciplinary academics, researchers, policy makers, activists, persons of interest and industry practitioners to present key findings, explore and activate result-based solutions to solve human rights issues.

Regrettably, the fast fashion industry is also one of the biggest contributors to pollution, accounting for 10% of humanities carbon emissions, 20% of global industrial water pollution and a major contributor to greenhouse gas emission. The conference will therefore, also explore themes of sustainability, ethical practices and the negative impact of fast fashion on climate change.

We invite speakers and call for papers with themes relating to but not limited to the following
